CRT Glass Processing
URT maintains a state-of-the art, automated de-manufacturing and recycling system that provides an effective, economical solution for recycling obsolete Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors and televisions into new products such as ceramic tiles. CRT glass recycling is a crucial process as CRTs contain hazardous materials, such as lead, which can harmfully affect people and the environment if not properly managed.
Our certified process involves the following steps:
Step 1:
Step 2:
Before processing the CRT tubes in our glass recycling system, our team removes all external components such as plastic or wood casings, circuit boards, copper yokes, cables, etc. These components are sorted for further recycling in other approved processes.
Step 3:
Once the CRT tubes are free of all their external components, they go into our glass recycling system where the glass is sorted by type and chemistry to produce commodities and/or product that are ready for downstream companies.
Leaded Glass Solution
URT, in collaboration with tile manufacturers and engineers, designed a process to convert CRT glass into a product designed to replace the raw materials in the production of ceramic tiles. URT’s CRT glass process converts the CRT glass to a fine powder. A mixture of other fluxes is then added to the powder in order to produce a vitrified compound for the manufacturing of tiles.
Facts
- URT first opened its doors under the name CRT Processing in 2003. At the time, URT was one of only a handful in the nation, and the only Midwestern firm, to provide CRT glass recycling solutions.
- URT was qualified as the first “eStewards” glass processor in the United States by BAN (Basel Action Network).
- All our protocols meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations, while safely processing the glass with no exposure to the environment.
- CRT TVs and monitors contain approximately 4-8 pounds of lead. A neurotoxin. Improper disposal means this toxic substance could leach into the ground.
